About Us

"The spirit is there in every boy; it has to be discovered and brought to light."  B-P

Pack 890 lives and breathes the saying that "the sport in Scouting is to find the good in every boy and develop it."  We serve the Scouting community in the Lake Highlands area of Dallas.  Most of our boys and girls come from schools in the Lake Highlands area including Lake Highlands Elementary, White Rock Elementary, Wallace Elementary, Merriman Park Elementary, Moss Haven Elementary, Scofield Christian School, White Rock North, Lakewood Elementary, Merriman Park Elementary, Skyview, and Highlander School.

As soon as a boy or girl "graduates" into kindergarten, he is immediately eligible to join as a Lion Cub and participate in our annual Cub Day Camp in June.

Pack 890 participates in most district and council-wide events including Twilight Camp,  Popcorn Sales, Pinewood Derby, and Scouting for Food just to name a few.  We hold annual fall and spring campouts for the entire family at nearby state parks.  At these campouts, each den participates in some of its own activities as well as several pack-wide activities.  We work on outdoor skills such as camping, cooking, pioneering, map and compass, sports, and campfires.

In Pack 890, we keep it simple and make it fun!  This makes it easier to teach them the purposes of Cub Scouting: doing your best, doing your duty to God and country, helping others, and obeying the Law of the Pack.  As a result of our FUN program, we normally have close to 100% advancement and retention.  Our goal is to start boys and girls on a lifelong journey and love of Scouting.  We prepare them to ultimately join a Scouts BSA Troop and work towards becoming Eagle Scouts.

We have active dens at each age group.  Each den holds den meetings or activities 1-3 times per month usually on Sunday afternoons.

Our monthly Pack meetings are held at the Lake Highlands United Methodist Church one Monday each month from 6:30 - 7:30 pm.  Our program runs on a school year basis along with summer activities targeted to earning the National Summertime Award.  We strive for each den to earn the National Den Award and for our Pack to earn the Journey to Excellence Award.

Our "big" activities include the following:

August -- Launchfest Recruiting Event (water rockets)

September -- Join Scouting recruitment; service project; Webelos Canoe Trip

October -- Northern Trail to Adventure/CTX (Circle Ten Experience); Fall Campout at a nearby State Park; Popcorn sales

November -- Webelos Woods campout; NASA Camp-in trip to Houston (when possible)

Our Pack is run by a dedicated group of parents called the Pack Committee.  The Pack Committee consists of all the registered (usually uniformed!) leaders and any other parent wishing to contribute or participate.  These meetings will be posted on our website calendar.  Any parent is welcome to attend any of these meetings and listen/observe, participate, or volunteer to help.  We welcome with open arms anybody who would like to pitch in.  The Pack Committee is led by the Committee Chair and the Cubmaster.  These are positions selected by the Pack Committee with approval from our sponsoring organization, the Lake Highlands United Methodist Church.   Your Den Leaders are also selected by the Pack Committee.  We strive for our leaders to take all the basic training available for their position in Scouting.  All leaders are trained in Youth Protection per BSA guidelines.
